There is no authoritative public dataset that measures the UK phone-repair industry as one neat market. Official data can describe the device base, operating-system mix, unused phones, e-waste and repairability rules. It cannot tell you the average shop’s revenue, screen-repair margin or total UK phone-repair market size without additional assumptions.
That distinction matters. Many “industry statistics” pages repeat commercial market forecasts with incompatible definitions, then mix them with shop anecdotes as though every number measured the same thing. This page keeps the population, reference period and limitation beside each statistic.
Evidence note: Figures below come from Ofcom, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Eurostat, the European Commission and ITU/UNITAR. The downloadable table records the source URL and access date. Cellbot has not blended private customer data into these totals.
In brief
- 93% of UK adults reported access to a smartphone for personal use in DSIT’s 2025/26 survey.

- None of those figures proves the size, growth rate or profitability of the independent phone-repair trade.

What do official UK sources tell us about the device base?
The strongest current UK evidence describes access and operating-system use, not repair demand.

DSIT reports that 93% of UK adults had access to a smartphone for personal use. Its population is adults, not repairs, customers or devices in circulation. One person may have more than one phone; an accessible phone may never require a commercial repair.
Ofcom’s Online Nation 2025 report records the operating system of the respondent’s main smartphone. The 54% iPhone and 45% Android shares do not measure units sold, the installed base of every handset in a household or repair jobs. They are still more useful for a UK repair shop than a global shipment chart when deciding which common models and customer journeys to test first.
What should a shop do with the device-mix data?
Use it as a prior, then replace it with your own repair evidence. Compare the official national mix with:
- enquiries by identified model;
- completed repairs by model and fault;
- quote-to-job rate;
- parts lead time and return rate; and
- contribution after parts, labour, payment fees and rework.
If your local repair mix differs from Ofcom, your verified job history should drive stocking. The national figure is context, not a purchase order.

What happens to old phones in Europe?
Eurostat’s 2024 survey gives a useful view of what people aged 16–74 in the EU said they did with an old mobile phone or smartphone.

The categories shown here do not sum to 100% because this is not the full Eurostat response table. Do not turn 51% kept at home into “51% available for trade-in”: some devices will be retained as backups, broken beyond economic repair, locked, missing or unwanted for reasons the headline does not reveal.
The defensible opportunity is a process, not a multiplied market-size claim. A shop can offer diagnosis, data-handling terms, grading and an auditable buyback route, then measure how many assessed devices become repairs, refurbishments, parts donors or regulated waste.

How large is the e-waste problem?
The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 provides the most rigorous international totals used in this article. It covers electrical and electronic waste, not phones alone.

The 82-billion-kg figure is a projection, not a measured 2030 result. The 22.3% rate is documented formal collection and recycling by mass; it is not the share of phones recycled, the share of materials recovered or a repair rate.
The repair-shop implication is narrower than the environmental headline. Shops need a recorded path for devices and parts that cannot be repaired or reused. That includes secure customer-data handling, battery segregation, approved waste routes and evidence of transfer where required. It does not permit a shop to claim that each repair “saves” a universal amount of carbon without a product-specific life-cycle method.

What changed for repairability in the EU?
New smartphones and slate tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025 are subject to product-specific ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements, with scope rules and exemptions. The European Commission’s March 2026 consumer guidance describes several measurable requirements.

This is EU product regulation, not a statement that identical rules automatically apply in Great Britain. Northern Ireland and cross-border sales can raise different questions. A business making legal or compliance decisions should check the applicable legislation and obtain qualified advice.
The cautious commercial conclusion is that structured repairability information and spare-part access are becoming more visible. It does not follow that every independent shop can obtain every part, complete every software pairing step or compel a manufacturer to approve a repair.

Can official data show the size of the phone-repair market?
Not cleanly. The UK Standard Industrial Classification includes 95.12 Repair of communication equipment, which covers cellular phones but also items such as modems, routers, two-way radios and commercial video cameras. Businesses may also carry multiple activities or use another classification.

This creates four common errors:
- treating all SIC 95.12 businesses as phone-repair shops;
- treating registered businesses as trading locations;
- combining phone-only and broader electronics-repair revenue estimates; and
- comparing forecasts whose geography, channel and service definitions differ.
A commercial market report may be useful if it exposes its definition, base data, currency basis and method. A headline CAGR without those fields cannot be reconciled with another forecast and should not be presented as settled fact.
Which popular repair statistics are not supported here?
This review found no current official UK series supporting a single national value for:
- average independent phone-repair shop revenue;
- average net or gross margin;
- average screen-repair ticket;
- share of customers who find a shop through Google;
- proportion of jobs that are screen or battery repairs;
- number of independent UK phone-repair locations; or
- carbon saved by every phone repair regardless of model, part and counterfactual.
These may be measurable inside a defined dataset. They should then be labelled with the shop population, period, exclusions, calculation and whether the value is a median, mean or proportion. “Industry estimate” is not enough.
A reusable evidence rule for repair statistics
Before repeating a number, record seven fields:
- Measure: what exactly was counted?
- Population: people, devices, jobs, shops, revenue or waste mass?
- Geography: UK, EU, world or a vendor’s customer base?
- Period: measured year, publication date and any forecast horizon?
- Unit: percentage, count, kilograms, pounds or US dollars?
- Method: survey, administrative data, model or projection?
- Limit: what decision can the number not support?

Phone repair statistics FAQs
How big is the UK phone-repair industry in 2026?
No current official public dataset isolates it cleanly. SIC 95.12 includes more than phone repair, while commercial reports use different definitions. Any single market-size answer should disclose its scope and method.
How many phone-repair shops are there in the UK?
There is no authoritative current count in the sources reviewed. Company registrations, business sites and premises are different populations, and SIC classifications are broader than phone repair alone.
Are iPhones the majority of UK smartphones?
In Ofcom’s 2025 Technology Tracker, 54% of UK smartphone users aged 16+ said their main smartphone was an iPhone and 45% said Android. That measures respondents’ main phones, not every handset in circulation or repair jobs.
Do most people recycle their old phones?
No in the cited EU survey. In 2024, 11% of EU individuals aged 16–74 reported recycling an old mobile or smartphone; 51% kept it at home. Those are EU figures, not a UK-only result.
Is global e-waste the same as phone waste?
No. The Global E-waste Monitor covers electrical and electronic equipment broadly. Its 62-billion-kg 2022 total must not be attributed to phones alone.
Can these statistics predict whether my shop will be profitable?
No. They describe context. Profitability depends on local demand, job mix, prices, parts, labour, rework, rent, tax and capacity. Use a shop-level model with sensitivity ranges instead.
